Entries from April 2008

Lately there’s been a lot of chatter about ’statement necklaces’ being the accessory for the new season, but I’m finding myself drawn to adorning the other end of my head.

Today I’ve been continually drawn to various ways of adorning my head. I feel like Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes when she discovers tiaras: “I just love finding new places to wear diamonds!” Well me too, I love finding new places to adorn myself. Period.

Evidently Naomi Cambell, of recent British Airways face-spitting fame, considers herself to be ‘like a grand-daughter’ to Nelsen Mandela. So much so that she is personally planning Manela’s upcoming ninetieth birthday party, inviting Jay-Z, Bono, and Rihanna to perform. Robbie Williams is also said to be teaming up with Queen for the event, where he’ll perform dressed as Freddie Mercury. The guest list is set to include the like of Kate Moss and Lewis Hamilton.
My question is this: if Zinzi Mandela is my namesake and Naomi is like a granddaughter to Nelson then I’m correlatively Naomi’s mother so I must be invited, right?
I’m sure the invitation just got lost in the mail.

Right now there are almost too many rockers’ and poppers’ {and hip-hoppers’} crazy-cool and fashionable daughters to keep track of. I’d like to call it the TeenVogue effect.
Last week Lily Collins came into the office (w/Mom in tow – so cute) for a fitting at the TeenVogue. And while she’s really nice/polite and she has the whole bold brow on a delicate face routine (which I tend to go ga-ga for) down pat, I can’t help but stay reserved, never quite convincing myself to fall on the floor in a puddle for her. There’s just that one ever-so-slight but ever-so-crucial issue: you know, because her dad is Phil Collins.
That’s why I’m so psyched about where the fashion world has recently cast its gaze: Frances Bean Cobain. Here is a fifteen-year-old fashionista that I (and my 4th grade self) can really feel OK about. According to today’s Daily Mail, Karl Lagerfeld himself is in hot pursuit of little Bean to be the newest face of Chanel. This comes after last month’s Harper’s Bazaar article and a rash of other up-market campaigns. Ironically, TeenVogue hasn’t given Frances a ton of face time. A quick CNP digital archive search revealed that save about 500 words in October 2005 she’s only really received a few tangential mentions!
Which is cool, since I’m not so keen on my young icons actually smelling like Teen Spirit.

Today I’m in heavy real estate scouring mode. I will not embarrass myself by announcing how many appointments I’ve booked for today (while also going to work for 8.5 hours, mind you!), but suffice to say it’s a lot.
Seeing this vintage sea-foam dress at Bittersweet Styles (an ebay vintage store I frequently browse) made me wish I was in the market for rustic canyon cottages and that I could spend my afternoon traipsing around looking for my perfect retreat!

Keith told me my blog could use a little more t & a so I figured what better time than a Thursday morning to do a little Heidi Montag reporting.
Evidently my recent #1 favorite ‘Hills’ character (in the rapidly [vapidly?] declining program) will have to miss her debut on Capital Hill. I am not quite sure how Lady Montag managed to be important enough in the world for MSNBC to invite her to sit at their table at the Correspondents gala, but it happened.

What would they have talked about over dinner?
What also happened is that Mr. & Mrs. Lady Montag seem to have gotten themselves un-invited. I’ll let you all guess who/what caused it to happen: a seven letter word for ‘couch potato’. Evidently Spencer, acting as Heidi’s ‘manager’, said her appearance was contingent on two (though Pratt-thing wasn’t invited) first class tickets to D.C. When MSNBC decided to pass on that lovely offer Spencer reportedly said the event wasn’t “A-listy enough”.
{Thanks to Page Six for the scoop and MTV and MSNBC for photos!}

Ready for an understatement? I have a really hard time waking up in the morning. In addition to my lid-locking behavior I also have an extreme weakness for clothing with a ton of volume. Something about extra folds and tucks gives me a similar feeling to sleepily relaxing in cloud-like sheets.

Today while poking around on {frolic} I discovered Leanimal by Leanne Marshall. Her clothes seem like they would induce a comfortably dreamlike state and many a compliment simultaneously.
For now there are only two pieces available in her etsy shop, but I am certain there will be more to come!

Today has been a so-so none-too-interesting day around here so I’ve set my sights on the future. This weekend I’m going to try and get out to Coachella and accordingly I’ve already created an imaginary look for myself. So far said look includes a pair of high waisted and wide legged jeans (or shorts), these sandals, this jacket and the headscarf below by Eugenia Kim.

Eugenia Kim headscarf at Satine. I wish it was 95% less money.

Hello all,
Just found a little tidbit in my internet wanderings that I thought might be useful to some of you. Evidently at BuiltbyWendy.com one can buy things from past seasons (luckily for me these things tend to stay on trend for ever after) on deep deep discount! Get to shopping!

Checking out the line-up for the Hyères Festival today, I started exploring the wild handicrafted world of Sandra Backlund. I think she may be one of my favorites of the designers showing next week, but it’s hard to say really since they’re all so talented and most of all out there (an essential quality in a designer if you ask me).

I had seen Ms. Backlund’s knitwear before (which I don’t want to disregard here because it’s really amazing — photos of that after the jump), but what I was especially taken by when flipping through her online lookbook were the two pieces made of disassembled clothes pins. Since pre-college at RISD I’ve always been amazed when people can take different materials and not only construct something to put on a body (because in reality, this is not really that hard to do), but really manipulate and transform the objects into a workable “fabric”. Way cool.
